Meanings
Japanese tattooing is a language. Every subject carries specific meaning — the koi doesn't just look powerful, it tells a particular story about perseverance and transformation. The dragon isn't just impressive, it's a guardian with a defined role in Japanese cosmology. The karashishi belongs with the botan for a reason that goes back centuries.
This section is a reference for those subjects. Understanding the meaning behind the imagery is part of what makes Japanese tattooing distinct from any other style — and part of what makes the consultation at my studio different. These pages are written from the perspective of a working artist who has spent years studying the tradition.
The motifs
These pages are written from my perspective as a working artist who has spent years studying this tradition — not as an academic. My goal is to share what I know, why these subjects matter, and how understanding the tradition changes the tattoo. The rules aren't arbitrary. They exist for reasons, and knowing those reasons makes the work better.
