Floral Work — Botan & Botanicals

Botan (peony), sakura (cherry blossom), and botanical work in traditional Japanese style. Floral subjects are the connective tissue of irezumi — they rarely stand alone, but they define the character of every composition they touch. These pieces explore what they look like as the primary subject.

About this work

Botan — the peony in Japanese tattooing

The botan (peony) is one of the most important botanical subjects in Japanese tattooing. It is associated with wealth, honor, and a kind of bold, unapologetic beauty — the Japanese sometimes called it the "king of flowers." In irezumi it most commonly appears alongside the karashishi (foo dog), the only creature said to be powerful enough to play with the peony without crushing it. But the botan also stands beautifully on its own — full petals, layered depth, and the kind of soft rendering that pushes against the boldness of the surrounding line work.

Floral work is where a lot of technical skill lives quietly. Getting the petal transitions right, keeping the color soft where it needs to be soft, building form without losing the delicacy of the subject — these pieces are an opportunity to work in a register that full sleeves and bold compositions don't always allow.
